Shirley Ann Scott, nee Klein, age 79, of Glen Ellyn, passed away peacefully on May 31st at Sunrise Senior Living in Glen Ellyn. She was the loving and devoted wife of Dr. Thomas R. Scott for 52 years.

Shirley was born on October 22, 1933 the youngest of 8 siblings of John and Lydia Klein and grew up on their Ackley, Iowa farm. She was sister to Mathilda Arnold, Austin, Texas: Earl, Ackley, Iowa, Raymond (Beverly) Hampton, Iowa;, and Charlotte, Chicago; the late Alvin Klein; Clara Baumgartner and Lucille Plagge. Beloved sister-in-law to Tom's Canadian Scott Families of Elwood (Beatrice), George (Helen) and Clifford (Marion), and 24 nieces and nephews. She was a very special friend to Coral, Pearl and Daniel Opem.

Shirley graduated from Ackley High School and was valedictorian; she held a B.S. from Elmhurst College and an M.S. in Elementary Education from Roosevelt University. After college Shirley's adventurous spirit took her to Europe for a summer and a church work camp in Germany. She was devoted to teaching little children in Grades 1 & 2 for 35 years in Franklin Park, Lombard, and Elmhurst. Her teaching methods enforced the joy of mastering reading, writing and mathematics. Shirley was a devoted 50 year member and choir member of First Church of Lombard, United Church of Christ.

Shirley recently received awards for her philanthropic endeavors from Elmhurst College and Northern Illinois University. She enriched her life by having a large circle of friends, reading, playing cards and world travel. She fought a long battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10:30 AM at First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St. Lombard, IL. Interment will be in Iowa at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Shirley Scott Children's Education Fund, First Church of Lombard, 220 S. Main St. Lombard, Il 60148.
